Vintage glider rally in Holland

Post by Alex »

Here is a quick report from my trip!

Saturday 25th - We derig "Daisy" the T21 and get her loaded onto the trailer ... spend 5 hrs rewiring trailer lights ...

Sunday 26th - at around 4pm we are ready to set of for Dover, we're staying overnight at Kent gliding club to catch a 6am ferry.

Monday 27th - Wake up at 3:30, get ready, and drive to Dover, the ferry is delayed but only a few hours, and soon we're on the boat for france!

We arrive at Dunkerque and begin the drive through Europe!

There is some traffic around Antwerp, but on the whole the drive is hassle free.

That evening there is the opening ceremony for the rally:

There are approximately 100 pilots here with about 70 gliders.

Tuesday is a bit of a washout, but we assembled the glider anyway:

I flew one flight just to get used to the site - it's a lot smaller than where I usually fly, and there are high voltage power lines on the approach, so it's a little more challenging.

The weather soon improves, and we had some very nice gliding days with strong lift.

This is the only glider of its type in the world!

That's daisy, our glider!

As you can see skies were busy:

Visited Schipol one day:

Then towards the end of the trip, caught the train into Amsterdam for a look around:

Some dutch guys made a machine gun for our glider ...

And then home :)

In conclusion - had a great time, flew 5 types of glider I'd never seen before, recorded hours and hours of video (to follow!) and drank A LOT :D Looking forward to next year - the rally is in Finland! if I can afford it, i'll be going.

I see you had an amazing time over here! Beautiful photos, nice gliders. And like C said: was that machine gun real :?:

Where we live looks completely different from where you were. And did you like the flatness of this country? Sadly the week you where here it was not the best weather, now it's 25+ again. And to bad you missed my message, would have been great a meet and greet! :D

First of many clips from my trip out to Holland in the summer ... sorry it's taken so long to get round to uploading it! This is a Kranich 2, a 1930s German built glider.

Epic video, lovely old glider. Nice to see the ''Veluwe'' from the air. (nature reserve)

The Junkers Stuka took their canopy design from this plane.

The Kranich was used by the Luftwaffe:
