A small weekend project and experiment gone wild :P
It was just supposed to be a test of setting up the camera in Blender for a texturing experiment. Fast forward 48 hours later- oh look we have a complete bus exterior! :emoji28:

Loaded this picture in Blender:

I originally intended to just model the front bumper and use this picture to project the texture from this image. I made the bumper, textured it and was amazed how well it looked.
Hmmm... Might as well go up from the bumper to the headlights area. That turned out good as well, so I went all the way up to the roof. And then... oops. I did the whole bus. :emoji55:

I used two other pictures beside this one to texture the sides and the rear end. Turned out WAY better than I expected.
Aaand et voilà:

Render time! :D

As long as the pictures are good quality, the bus that is photographed is well lit and (relatively) clean, the photo textures can turn out really good!
Of course, this result can be further enhanced by adding AO and fiddling around in Photoshop, but just photo textures alone do the job quite well.
The model itself is low poly, just 35k polygons. But since the photo textures add a lot of detail, it's not really noticeable. And such models are very good for games like OMSI.

That looks wonderful, just one question. Did you make the texture yourself or did you use the photo as sampling? I see you mentioned photo textures, is there a way to transfer those onto the model? :O

Thanks guys! :D

@DanDeKalb
I projected the texture onto the model. As I said, I loaded up the picture in Blender and adjusted the in-blender camera angle with the angle of the photo, so the bus is straight with X and Y axis.
After I modeled the bus, I used the command "project from view" when UV unwrapping and that projected the UV's on the image from the camera angle. I did adjust some edges manually, but that's it basically.

Oh, I get it, that's pretty neat.
However, doesn't that mean the rear of the bus has a lower resolution than the front? So if you wanted to make a skin, it would end up distorted if you didn't use the same angle.

Yes, you are right. I used two other pictures, one for side and one for the rear.

Ok, this makes more sense, I thought you textured the entire bus just some one image. :D
Very cool anyway, I'd take samples from real images when I was making bus models for Cities: Skylines.
